What We Do

BUILDING COMMUNITY

What We Do

We host social and academic events for students interested in mathematics at UBC. We also make available our own merchandise and exam packages through our online store; as of the 2023-24 academic year, our exam packs are made freely available online. Visit our Facebook or Instagram page to see when the next event is! You don’t have to be a math major to join, though many of us like talking about math.

Who We Are

TAKING LEADERSHIP

Who We Are

The UMS is one of the oldest student clubs at UBC. While it is not known when the club was founded, historical records from 1924 show that the club was well established by then. We can’t help but feel that the driving force behind the UMS has always been the prioritization of the social component of student life, especially in a highly intensive academic environment. Today, the UMS is run by individuals who use their skills to expand the club portfolio through various projects and initiatives, with the goal of promoting fellowship, inclusivity, and community.

Where To Find Us

CLUB LOUNGE

Where to Find Us

Our spacious lounge is located in MATX 1119. As of September 2021 the lounge is currently open to the general public. We have couches, chalkboards, snacks, and board games (so many board games). Feel free to drop by our room! Please follow the BC COVID-19 guidelines closely and stay home if you are sick or feeling unwell.

MATH CLUB

How to Join

The UBC Undergraduate Mathematics Society (UMS) used to be known as the UBC Math Club. We rebranded as a society in August 2019 to reflect our status as a department-associated organization in addition to being an AMS club. To become a member you can either join our Discord server or our mailing list.

Although the terms “UMS” and “Math Club” carry distinct meanings, they refer to the same collective of individuals at UBC. The trefoil knot logo captures this entwinement in the form of a Möbius strip that is tied in a trefoil knot. Created by Kevin Zhao in 2019, the three interconnected lobes of the knot trace a continuum of the club’s identity: the UMS, the Math Club, and the assembly of its members.
