THE MISSION

About

In the summer of 2023, building on the success of the SFU vs. UBC Mathematics Competition, the math clubs of UBC, SFU, and TRU collaborated to kickstart an annual online inter-university undergraduate mathematics competition. With plans to expand the participating universities each year, the competition invites undergraduate students to join and compete in teams.

Despite being set in the realm of undergraduate mathematics, this competition will require a tremendous amount of problem-solving skills and ingenuity! The goal is to give undergraduate students a chance to experience competition-level mathematics in a fun and collaborative manner, in addition to promoting a well-rounded academic experience that includes an exposure to skills not necessarily acquired in the classroom.

THE BATTLEGROUND

Format

Teams of (up to) three undergraduate students from participating universities have three hours to complete an exam paper consisting of problems from the following three subjects: discrete math, linear algebra, and calculus.

Each team picks one of two problems from each section to solve—a total of three problems to be solved. The contest is open book and internet; however, communication about the problems outside one’s team is prohibited. The contest paper is published online and all submissions are to be sent electronically.

THE CHAMPIONS

Winners

In this contest, the ultimate champion(s) will be determined by the highest scoring team(s) and the university they represent. The winning team(s) will be distinguished with an elegant black glass plaque designed and prepared by Eclipse Awards.

Additionally, the top three teams will receive gift-card prizes and their placing in the contest will be duly recorded. Generally, there will also be a raffle prize for other teams that demonstrate good effort.
